Harrisonburg, Va. (March 10) – Georgia State senior forward Danyiell McKeller was voted to the All-CAA second team as announced at the annual Colonial Athletic Association Banquet Wednesday night.
McKeller, a 5-11 native of Fayetteville, N.C. (Westover HS), is only the second Georgia State player to earn second-team honors since the Panthers became CAA members in 2005-06.
Senior Shay Rawls was named to the All-Academic team on the honorable mention list with her career 3.0 GPA.
McKeller enters the CAA Championship averaging 18.0 points per game (No. 39 in the NCAA), but had been in the top 25 all season before a hamstring injury caused her to count a 0 for a game she played just one minute. She was also No. 3 in the CAA in steals (No. 56 NCAA) and No. 18 in the CAA in rebounding (6.0) on a team that led the CAA in defense (No. 24 NCAA) and steals (No. 23 NCAA).
The power forward scored 20 or more points in a game in 13 of her 26 games this year and moved into the Top 10 in school history with her 1,282 career points. She is just the third player in school history to start 100 games. She was MVP of both Georgia State's Thanksgiving and Christmas tournaments and was a CAA Player of the Week on Dec. 21, marking the third time in her career to be Player of the Week.
“Danyiell is clearly one of the best players to ever wear the Georgia State uniform,” head coach Lea Henry said. “She is an explosive offensive player and has developed into a tremendous all-around player. She has a great work ethic and is extremely coachable. She is someone a team can count on to help win games.”
"Shay has always been a hard worker on the court and in the classroom and is the type of person you can always count on to do her best," Coach Henry said.
The CAA Player of the Year is Delaware's 6-foot-5 freshman sensation, Elena Delle Donne (26.9 ppg). Joining her on the first team are James Madison guard Dawn Evans (NCAA leader in three-point baskets, 25.5 ppg), last year's Player of the Year, Drexel's Gabriela Marginean (23.0 ppg), Towson's point guard Shanae Baker-Brice (18.0, 4.3 assists) and VCU's power forward D'Andra Moss (17.5, 6.3 rebounds).
She is the third player to earn All-CAA following Brittany Hollins as a third-team pick last year, with Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen earning second team in 2006-07 and third team in 2005-06.
