Three Panthers Qualify for NCAA East Track Regional

ATLANTA — Georgia State hurdler Tamara Moore, sprinter Charlesha Lightbourne and triple jumper Angelia Nugent qualified for the NCAA East Regional, the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Thursday.

The 2012 NCAA East Regional will be held in Jacksonville, Fla. on the campus of the North Florida. Competition will take place from May 24-26.

A junior from Carollton, Ga., Moore registered the 31st fastest 100m hurdle time in the east region when she clocked a 13.55 at the Auburn War Eagle Invitational on April 20. The top 48 times in all events qualify for a spot in the NCAA Regional competition.

Moore won both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles at the recent CAA Track and Field Championship to lead the Panther women's team to a third place finish. Moore was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer by individually scoring 20 of GSU's 122 points.

A senior from Crown Haven, Bahamas, Lightborne clocked the 34th best 200m time in the region after running 23.80 at the War Eagle Invitational.

Lightbourne finished third in the 100m at the CAA meet by running 11.91. She also qualified for the finals of the 200m race by registering the fourth fastest time in the event prelims.

A senior from Paterson, N.J., Nugent recorded her best triple jump of the season while defending her CAA title at the conference meet. Last season, Nugent qualified for both the NCAA regional and national meets and set the school record in the triple jump.

At the 2011 NCAA East Regional, Moore ran a 100m hurdle time of 14.12 to finish fifth in her heat and 40th overall. She qualified for the meet after winning the event at the Albany State Last Chance Qualifier in a personal best time of 13.50.

Named the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2011, Moore earned an individual conference title in the 100m hurdles as part of last season's GSU conference championship team. A total of six individual Panthers qualified for the regional, with Nugent advancing to the NCAA championships.

The GSU women's track and field program has had a total of 65 student-athletes qualify for NCAA Regional competition since 2003. Five of those individuals have gone on to the national meet.
