ATLANTA--The Georgia State
men's tennis team continues its fall schedule at the highly-competitive ITA
Southeast Regional in Tallahassee, Fla., beginning on Thursday.
The
Southeast region is regarded as one of the strongest of the 12 different
regions as broken down by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The region
boasts eight nationally-ranked teams as of last year's final rankings in
Georgia (5), Florida (12), Florida State (32), South Florida (51), Georgia
State (60), Georgia Tech (62), North Florida (66) and Miami (67). All results
from this weekend's ITA-sanctioned tournament will be recorded for individual
singles and doubles results only.
Georgia
State enters the tournament following a dominating showing at the Georgia
Southern Championships. Senior Victor Valente took the singles title in the
Blue Draw with a 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) victory over teammate junior Robert
Schulze in the finals. The Panthers won 21 matches and dropped just one against
competition from other schools. Senior Lucas Santa Ana took home the White Draw
singles title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the finals against Georgia Southern's
Marco Osorio. Schulze teamed with sophomore Sofiane Chevallier to win the Main
Draw doubles title with an 8-6 win in the finals against GSU's Santa Ana and
Valente.
Thursday
will mark the first time GSU, led by first-year head coach Joerg Barthel, has competed in the ITA Southeast Regionals since
2007 at Lexington, Ky. Play at this year's event begins at 8:30 a.m. on
Thursday morning with the qualifying draw for the singles competition. The
matches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday begin at 9 a.m. each morning until
Monday when the finals of the singles and doubles events begin at 10 a.m.
