ATLANTA—Georgia State tennis standout Victor Valente was named Thursday to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men's At-Large first team, becoming GSU's 13th Academic All-American but just the third first-team selection in school history.

A senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Valente is Georgia State's second Academic All-America honoree for 2012-13, along with baseball player Scott Sarratt. GSU has had six Academic All-Americans over the last three years.

Valente maintains a 4.16 grade point average in his major of computer information systems. He was recently honored with the NCAA Elite 89 Award, signifying the men's tennis student-athlete participating in the NCAA Championships with the highest grade point average.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Valente ranks as the most decorated men's tennis player in Georgia State annals as a six-time all-conference selection in singles and doubles. He was selected as the Southeast Region Senior of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), which also awarded him the Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award for the Southeast Region.

In 2013, Valente led the Panthers to the Sun Belt Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Championships. He also earned selection as an individual to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. In doubles, he and partner Lucas Santa Ana earned Georgia State's first ever victory in NCAA play with a first-round upset over the No. 9-ranked team of Tom Jomby and Kevin Lai from Kentucky.

Valente finished the season ranked No. 66 in the ITA singles rankings with a record of 28-9 while compiling a 20-5 mark in doubles for a final ranking of No. 41. He is the Panthers' career leader in singles wins with 79.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

The At-Large Team includes student-athletes from all men's sports other than football, basketball, baseball, soccer and track.
