ATLANTA-- Freshman point guard Madison Newby of the women's basketball team is the first Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week, powered by the U.S. Marines, of 2016.
Newby, the 5-8 rookie from Lawrenceville's Archer High School, scored a season-high 16 points to help the Panthers open Sun Belt Conference play with a 68-63 road win over UT Arlington, which was picked to finish second in the league.
She added another strong effort with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals in the loss to Texas State.
For the week, Newby averaged 13.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals while shooting 59 percent from the field on the two-game Texas swing.
Through 11 games, Newby is averaging 8.7 points and a Sun Belt-leading 4.6 assists. Her field goal accuracy of 56.9 percent ranks fourth in the league.
