Panthers Dominate at ETSU Meet with Five Firsts

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Georgia State finished the second day of the seven-team David E. Walker Invitational at ETSU with three more first-place finishes and two more second-place efforts.

For the two days of competition, GSU had 20 top-five finishes, broken down by five first-place finishes, three seconds, five thirds, four fourths and three fifth-place efforts.

Leading the way individually were LaPorscha Wells and Stephanie Berger. Wells won both the shot put and the weight throw events, while Berger finished first in both the 3,000m and 5,000m runs. Sprinter Ravin Gilbert won the 60m dash and was third in the 200m run.  Sammi Donovan was second to Berger in both the 3,000m and 5,000m runs. Long jumper Katherine Randolph set a school indoor record in her event with a leap of 7.71m (18-9).

Wells, the junior from Augusta who was Sun Belt Field MOP of the Championship Meet with two wins, won Saturday's shot put with a heave of 15.17m (49-09.25) to top the 24 shot putters. She won the 17-thrower weight throw competition on Friday.

Berger, the graduate transfer student from South Carolina who was All-Sun Belt in cross country, started off her indoor season with the two wins. On Saturday, she topped the 18 runners with a time of 10:22.87 in the 3,000m run with teammates Donovan and Jordan Townsley second and third in 10:34.82 and 10:35.89.

Gilbert, the senior who was Sun Belt Track MOP of the Championship Meet, raced to her win in the 60m Saturday in 7.60 to beat the 41 other runners. Teammate Jada Steward was sixth in 7.82.

Sophomore Nuria Ramirez finished second among the 17 runners in the mile run in 5:16.24, with teammate Lindsay Shealy fifth in 5:19.15.  Shealy had finished fourth in the 800m run in 2:20.65.

The Panthers' 4x400m relay team finished third among the 15 relay units. The quartet of Brianna Archer, Jasmyne Robinson, Tyler Watson and Sydney Davis clocked 3:57.43.

On Saturday, Nylah Chavis had a fourth-place finish in the high jump (1.61m, 5-03.25), while Alysiah Whittaker was fourth in the shot put (14.37m, 47-01.75).

The track and field team starts classes on Monday then goes right back on the road for competition with a meet in Birmingham, Ala. Friday and Saturday.
