STILLWATER, Ok.- The men's tennis team fell 4-3 at No. 15 Oklahoma State Friday, despite two wins over ranked players. The Panthers fell to 4-3 for the season, while the Cowboys improved to 9-1.
The team opened the match up strong, winning the doubles point in the third set. Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Andrukhou were defeated by No. 5 Arjun Kadhe and Julian Cash 6-3 in the No. 1 match, but Zackery Kennedy and Jack MacFarlane tied doubles play up with a 6-4 win over No. 48 Lucas Gerch and Temur Ismailov. The point-clincher came from Jannis Koeke and Joseph Bishop in a 6-7 (7-5) defeat of Tristan Meraut and Mateo Ruiz Naranjo.
In singles play, the Cowboys quickly tied the match 1-1 after Acuna fell to Meraut 6-3, 6-0. The second Panther to finish was Koeke, who was defeated by Ismailov 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 match. OSU pulled away from Georgia State with a third singles win as Andrukhou fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Lukas Finzelberg.
GSU began to close the deficit 2-3 with Kennedy's win over No. 111 Kadhe 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) in the No. 2 match. The Cowboys clinched the match 4-2 in the No. 5 match as MacFarlane was defeated by No. 93 Jurence Mendoza 7-6 (2), 2-6, 7-5. Jaworski was the last Panther to finish, earning the final point of the game with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (6) win over Nathan Roper.
”Today was a great college tennis match. It's always exciting to have the chance to play against a top-15 team and I thought our guys definitely stepped up to the challenge,” said head coach Brett Ross. “All of our guys stayed focused for three straight hours and as a coach you can't ask for more than that from you players. It's encouraging to know that this young team was so close pulling off the biggest win in school history.”
The Panthers return to the court quickly, facing No. 65 Wichita State on Saturday. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available.
