LaPorscha Wells Wins Sun Belt's Highest Honor

LaPorscha Wells, who set both a pair of Sun Belt and Georgia State records, has been named the Sun Belt Conference Field Performer for Indoor Track and Field season, as voted upon by league coaches.

Wells, the junior from Augusta, Ga. turned in two amazing performances that set both Sun Belt and GSU school records in the weight throw and the shot put as she scored 20 points at the Sun Belt Championships.

The junior, who had been the Most Outstanding Performer of the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships in the spring, had a weight throw Monday of 20.06m (65-9.75). That topped the Sun Belt Championship mark of 19.78m and her school mark of 19.32m. 

On Tuesday, Wells won the shot put with a 16.55m (54-3.75) toss to break the Sun Belt mark of 16.47m and her school record of 16.01m. 

Well's longest shot put distance is currently No. 20 in qualifying for NCAA Indoor Championships. Her weight throw distance is currently No. 45 in qualifying for NCAA Indoor Championship

Wells has produced three of the top five longest indoor shot puts in GSU school history, as well as three of the top five longest indoor weight throws in GSU school history.

This winter, Wells finished first in five indoor meets this season in the shot put competition, while having three first-place finishes in weight throw competition.

Last spring, Wells had been named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships.

Georgia State will start the outdoor season March 12 at the Jacksonville State Invitational.
