NEW YORK, N.Y.- In the first of two matches this weekend, the Georgia State women's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 32 Columbia Friday afternoon. The Panthers fell to 5-3 on the season while the Lions improved to 8-3.
In doubles play, GSU opened up with a win over Columbia when Chiara Volejnicek and Daniela Ramirez defeated Andrea Kevakian and Vivian Cheng 6-0. The Lions bounced back as Niri Rasolomalala and Kristin Rhese fell to Kanika Vaidya and Adi Milstein 6-0, tying doubles play at 1-1. Linn Timmerman and Tarani Kamoe were defeated 6-3 in the No. 1 match by Rima Asatrian and Alexandra Solovyev.
With the Lions up 1-0 over the Panthers, Timnmerman fell 6-3, 6-1 to Vaidya in the No. 1 singles match. Volejnicek earned the first point for GSU in the No. 5 match with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Milstein. Columbia continued pull away from Georgia State as Asatrian recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Rehse.
The Lions earned the match-clinching point in the No. 3 match, with Solovyev defeating Rasolomalala 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the tie-breaker set. Ramirez lessened the point deficit 6-4, 7-6 (1) victory over Cheng in the No. 6 match before Lara Vovk fell 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4) to Kevakian in the final singles match.
