Panthers Open MSU Spring Citrus Challenge 15th

SORRENTO, Fla. – The Georgia State women's golf team opened play at the MSU Spring Citrus Challenge with a 24-over 312 to sit in 15th place following the first day of competition at RedTail Golf Club.

Freshman Jemima Gregson and junior Jooeun Bae led the Panthers with rounds of 76 in the second-to-last regular season tournament of the year. The duo are tied for 42nd with 36 holes to play.

“We struggled a little bit on Sunday, but the good this is that the teams are tightly bunched and we can quickly move up the leaderboard with a good round tomorrow,” head coach Cathy Mant said. “The goal is just to get a little bit better every day and see what happens.”

Junior Solene LeCoz sits tied for 77th following an opening round 79, while sophomore Paula Zabarte shot a 9-over 81 and sits 93rd. Sophomore Yasemin Sari rounded out the line-up with a 15-over 87 and stands tied for 111th.

Jacksonville State opened the tournament with a 4-over 292 to hold a two stroke lead entering the second round. Four teams are tied for second place at 6-over, including Ball State, Western Kentucky, Elon and Florida Gulf Coast.

Jacksonville State's Valentina Giraldo opened the event with a 7-under 65 to hold a five-stroke lead over a trio of golfers. Western Kentucky's Emily Alexander, Ball State's Kelsey Sear and Elon's Heather Munro are tied for second at 2-under. Five golfers stand at even par on the par 72 course.

Following this week's tournament, Georgia State will return to action March 27-29, hosting the 23rd annual John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate at Eagle's Landing Country Club. The event is free and open to the public.
