WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
* GSU will compete in the downtown meet at Georgia Tech Friday-Saturday.
* Admission is free to the 14-team meet that includes three ACC and three SEC schools among the field of eight conferences.
* Saturday's field events start at 10:30 a.m. and running events at 12:30 p.m.
Georgia State will compete in Atlanta in the 14-team Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech on Saturday. GSU's first opportunity to perform in front of family and friends in Atlanta will come at the George C. Griffin track beside the McCamish Pavilion at Fowler Street and 10th Street.
The 27-member GSU squad starts with two events Friday evening (hammer throw and 5,000m run). On Saturday, the field events start at 10:30 a.m. and the running events at 12:30 p.m. Admission is free.
This Yellow Jacket Invitational field includes 14 teams from eight conferences. The schools include a trio of ACC schools (Clemson, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech), a trio of SEC schools (Auburn, Georgia and South Carolina) and a trio of SoCon schools (Furman, ETSU and Western Carolina). Other conferences include C-USA (MTSU), MAC (Kent State), A-Sun (Kennesaw State), Big South (UNC Asheville) along with Georgia State from the Sun Belt Conference.
Georgia State's 2016 squad is led by a pair that were Sun Belt Championship Most Outstanding Performers last spring. Senior sprinter Ravin Gilbert leads the way in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, while junior thrower LaPorscha Wells paces that group in the shot put and hammer throw. Senior distance runner Stephanie Berger was all-conference in cross country and has the second-fastest 1,500m time in the Sun Belt this year. Junior hurlder Tyler Watson has the fastest 400m hurdle clocking I the conference. Freshman Sydney Davis has posted the fastest 200m time this spring. Throwers Alysiah Whittaker and Tracy Dorcemont have won events this spring.
