MURFREESBORO, Tenn.- The No. 66 Georgia State men's tennis team defeated its second conference team Friday afternoon with a 6-1 win over South Alabama.
The Panthers improved to 11-4 and 2-0 in the Sun Belt, while the Jaguars fell to 12-8 and 0-1 in the Sun Belt.
GSU pulled away from South Alabama early, winning doubles play in the third set. Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Andrukhou defeated Gerhard Gruindelingh and Olivier Gingas 6-2 in the No. 1 match. The Jaguars tied up doubles play when Zackery Kennedy and Jack MacFarlane fell 6-2 to Tim Skrala and Juan Troglia. Jannis Koeke and Felipe Jaworski clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Tuki Jacobs and Pierre Noyon in the No. 3 match.
In singles play, MacFarlane earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Gingas to put GSU ahead 2-0. In the No. 6 match, Jaworski defeated Lucas Gonzalez 6-1, 6-4. Acuna clinched the match for the Panthers, earning a 6-3, 6-3 win over Troglia in the No. 3 match.
The only loss for GSU came when Koeke fell 6-4, 6-3 to Jacobs in the No. 1 match. Kennedy's 7-6, 6-2 win over Skrala put the score at 5-1. Andrukhou closed the match for the Panthers, defeating Noyon 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 4 match.
Georgia State will be back on the court Saturday at 10 a.m. to face UAB in the second of a three-day series.
