GREENVILLE, S.C. – Georgia State won its third-straight Furman Intercollegiate title on Sunday, shooting a final round 7-under 281 to win by 15 strokes on the Furman University Golf Course. It marked the Panthers second win of the season with just one regular season event remaining before the conference championship.
Grey made five birdies en route to a final round 4-under 68 to finish the 54-hole event at 8-under par and alone in third place. Sophomore Max Herrmann finished just one stroke back at 7-under and tied for fourth following a final round 1-under 71.
For Grey, who is ranked No. 87 in the country by GolfStat, he earned his fourth third-place finish of the year and fifth top 10.
The 15-stroke margin of victory is the eighth-largest in program history and just one back of the 16-stroke win at the event last year.
“Really proud of the way the guys played this week,” head coach Joe Inman said. “We came in as the two-time defending champions and there was only going to be one result that was acceptable; a win. We are playing our best golf of the year right now and I look forward to the upcoming weeks as we prepare for Mississippi State's tournament and the conference championship.”
Junior Nathan Mallonee shot a second-straight round in the 60s, this time a 3-under 69 on Sunday, to finish alone in ninth at 5-under, giving the Panthers three golfers in the top 10.
Sophomore Alexander Herrmann finished with a 5-over 77 to tie for 32nd with freshman Nick Budd at 2-over. Budd shot a final round 1-over 73.
Five members of the team also competed as individuals. Nathan Williams led the way with a tie for 49th following a final round 4-under 68 that left him 4-over for the tournament. Sean Murphy finished at 11-over and tied for 87th following a final round 76.
Sam Asbury and James Kyles tied for 93rd at 13-over. Asbury shot a final round 75, while Kyles finished with a 79. Hayden Poole rounded out the individuals shooting a 77 on Sunday to finish tied for 103rd at 18-over.
Georgia State extended its lead over Harvard from four strokes after two rounds to the 15-stroke win. Harvard finished at 8-under par. USC Upstate finished third at 7-under, with Akron coming in fourth at 5-under. Host Furman rounded out the top five finishing at 4-under par.
USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield shot a final round 69 to finish 13-under and earn a three-stroke win. Wofford's Andrew Novak finished second at 10-under, with Grey following in third at 8-under. Max Herrmann, Akron's George Baylis, Harvard's Rohan Ramnath and Chattanooga's Wes Gosselin tied for fourth at 7-under par.
Georgia State will return to the course April 4-5 for the Old Waverly Collegiate in West Point, Miss. It will serve as the final regular season event of the year.
