ATLANTA – LaPorscha Wells of Georgia State's track and field team and Jack Thompson of the baseball team were announced Georgia State co-Student-Athletes of the Week, powered by the U.S. Marines.
LaPorscha Wells, Track and Field
Leading Friday's track and field record performances was junior LaPorscha Wells. In the hammer throw at the 73rd annual Florida Relays, Wells topped the 26-thrower field with a school record distance of 60.36m (198-0). That is the ninth-longest throw in the NCAA East this year, placing her in great position to qualify for postseason. She topped her own previous of 59.31m and topped her Sun Belt season-best throw by 4m. Her Friday win saw throwers from UCF, Virginia Tech and Louisville finish 2-3-4. This could be her second NCAA-qualifying event as her shot put of 15.78m is 15th best in the NCAA East.
Jack Thompson, Baseball
Sophomore first baseman Jack Thompson went 10-for-16 (.625 average) with two homers, seven RBI and eight runs scored in four games last week, including victories over Mercer and UT Arlington.
Thompson's three-run homer at Mercer was the key blow as the Panthers won 10-6 to sweep the season series from the Bears. Against UT Arlington, he collected six hits in Saturday's doubleheader, including his second homer of the week and fourth of the season. In Sunday's 8-7 win over UTA, he had three hits, including a run-scoring single that put the Panthers ahead 7-6 in the seventh inning.
For the season, Thompson is hitting .359 and is tied for the team lead with 25 RBI (top five in the Sun Belt). Also an excellent defensive player at first base, he is the only Panther who has started every game this season.
