ATLANTA – With an automatic bid to NCAA Regional play on the line, the Georgia State women's golf team will open the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Sunday at The Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
Georgia State has won five conference championships under head coach Cathy Mant, but will be looking for its first Sun Belt title and first since 2010, which would return to the Panthers to NCAA Regional play for the first time in six years.
Freshman Jemima Gregson will lead the Panthers against the field of nine teams. Gregson has a team-best 76.38 scoring average and is up for All-Sun Belt honors. She has recorded five top 25 finishes this year, including a pair of top 10s.
The Panthers are coming off a ninth place finish at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate where Gregson finished tied for ninth.
“We have had a couple of great weeks of practice and the team is excited to compete for a championship,” head coach Cathy Mant said. “We are a young team that has continued to develop all year and there would be no better way to finish the season than with a win to earn a conference championship and advance to NCAA Regional play.”
The nine team field for the championship will include Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Little Rock, UL Monroe, South Alabama, Texas State and Troy.
This week's line-up will include juniors Jooeun Bae and Solene LeCoz, along with sophomores Yasemin Sari and Paula Zabarte and freshman Jemima Gregson.
Troy has won the last two Sun Belt Conference Championships, including last year's rain-shortened win by 12 strokes as Georgia State finished fifth. Little Rock's Stina Resen earned the individual title by a stroke in 2015.
Live scoring throughout the event can be found at Golfstat.com. Georgia State will be paired with Georgia Southern and Arkansas State for the first round on Sunday, going off Hole No. 1 at 8:30 a.m. ET. The second round is scheduled for Monday, with the final round coming on Tuesday.
With a win, Georgia State will advance to NCAA Regional play May 5-7, at one of four locations throughout the country.
