ATLANTA -- No. 48 Georgia State Women's Tennis claimed the top seed and with that a first round bye for the Sun Belt Conference Championships in New Orleans, the league announced today.
Georgia State will be in action on Friday at 8 a.m. in the quarter final match and will play the winner of the UL Monroe/Appalachian State match. The Panthers swept the Mountaineers 7-0 at a neutral site match in March and the match against UL Monroe was cancelled due to weather earlier this season.
The Panthers (12-5) closed the season on a five match winning streak that includes a perfect 4-0 record in conference competition.
No. 48 Georgia State jumped in the rankings early in the season following a 4-3 upset over now No. 11 South Carolina. The win was part of a 4 match winning streak to open the season. The Panthers won three matches against ranked opponents this season, including a 5-2 victory over currently No. 73 Winthrop and No. 53 South Alabama.
Georgia State is led by senior Linn Timmermann who holds an 11-5 record in singles and 11-4 record in doubles with partner Tarani Kamoe. She also earned two Sun Belt Conference Student-Athlete of the Week awards this season.
