ATLANTA- The No. 58 Georgia State men's tennis team earned the No. 1 seed and a first round bye in the Sun Belt Conference Championships, the conference announced Tuesday.
The Panthers will open tournament play in the semifinals on Saturday at 3 p.m. and will face the winner of the No. 4 UL Lafayette/No. 5 UT Arlington match on Friday. GSU swept the Ragin' Cajuns 4-0 in its first conference match of the season at home in March, and the Panthers have not faced the Mavericks this season.
Georgia State finished the regular season with a 17-5 record (4-0 Sun Belt) and won eight of its last nine matches. The team was last defeated in a close 4-3 loss to UNCW on senior day in Piedmont Park. The Panthers fell five spots in the rankings following the 1-1 weekend.
GSU is led by the Sun Belt Student-Athlete of the Week award winners: freshman Jack MacFarlane, sophomore Sebastian Acuna and Zackery Kennedy.
MacFarlane ranks second on the team behind Felipe Jaworski (15-3) in singles play, earning a 13-7 record during spring competition. He has recorded six match-clinchers for the Panthers, with one coming over then-No. 62 Middle Tennessee State.
Kennedy is next on the team with his singles record of 12-6, and Acuna coming in the top-five with a 10-5 record.
