ATLANTA – Georgia State student-athletes have performed well in the classroom according to NCAA statistics released Wednesday as part of the Academic Progress Rate (APR) update.
Among the highlights of the report were six Panther squads posting multiyear APR averages above 980 – including perfect scores of 1000 by softball and cross country to rank within the top 10 percent of teams in the country. Along with the perfect scores for those two programs, men's soccer (981), women's golf (982), women's soccer (984) and court volleyball (989) all exceed 980 in the annual report.
Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one retention point for staying in school and one eligibility point for being academically eligible. The total points for the team are divided by points possible and multiplied by 1,000 to create the APR score.
For the NCAA, the 2014-15 overall four-year rate is 979, up one point from the previous year's mark. Three-point improvements in men's and women's basketball and football all contributed to that increase. Men's basketball teams earned a 964 (up from 961), women's basketball teams earned a 978 (up from 975) and football teams earned a 959 (up from 956).
In 2015-16 and beyond, the four-year average of 930 will be the only benchmark for APR. Previously teams needed to earn a minimum score of 900 on the four-year APR or a 930 average over the most two recent years to be eligible for postseason competition.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. Teams can face sanctions such as scholarship losses and restriction on practice for falling below certain thresholds.
