Alysiah Whittaker proved it was as easy as 1, 2, 3 at the WCU Invitational. The Sun Belt coaches must have figured it was as easy as 1, 2, 3 to vote her the Sun Belt Conference Field Athlete of the Week, as announced today by the league office in New Orleans.
Busy Whittaker won the discus throw at Western Carolina with a heave of 48.92m (160-6) to easily win by six feet. That's the third-longest throw in school history and she has the first and second as well. Her season best has her No. 19 in the NCAA East qualifying in this event and second best in the Sun Belt.
Whittaker finished second Friday in the hammer throw to teammate LaPorscha Wells with her throw of 50.60m (166-0). She finished her 1-2-3 show with a third-place finish in the shot put, behind winning teammate Wells. Her shot put distance was 15.05m (49-4 ½).
In a team-scored meet, Whittaker accounted for 24 points in the Panthers' win. She has the fifth-longest shot put in the Sun Belt this year and is No. 22 in the NCAA East in this, putting her in position as a double qualifier for the NCAA East.
This is the fourth time a GSU track and field athlete has been honored this semester. LaPorscha Wells was the Athlete of the Week during indoor season (Jan. 27) and the outdoor season (April 6). Ravin Gilbert won the track Athlete of the Week on April 6 and now Whittaker wins for May 4.
