Drake and Wells Named Student-Athletes of the Week

ATLANTA – Sophomore catcher Ivie Drake and junior track and field thrower LaPorscha Wells had outstanding efforts in conference tournaments, earning the pair this week's Georgia State Student-Athletes of the Week award, powered by the U.S. Marines.

GSU's two-time all-conference catcher helped lead the Panthers to three Sun Belt tournament wins and third place overall. Ivie Drake was nearly unstoppable with a .706 on-base percentage (on base 12 of 17 times), with a .643 batting average (9 hits in 14 official at bats). Drake pounded two home runs and two doubles among those hits. She fielded her catcher's position with no errors in the five games over three days.

Junior Panther field star LaPorscha Wells won GSU's lone gold medal at the Sun Belt Championships in Louisiana, topping the 24 competitors in the hammer throw. Her second day saw her finish third in the shot put with the second-longest shot put in school history. Wells will head on to the NCAA East competition in two weeks as her best hammer throw and her best shot put each rank No. 15 on the list of all schools east of the Mississippi River.
