JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ravin Gilbert missed by. 1 of a second of moving on to the semifinals in the 200m race on Day 2 of the NCAA East Preliminaries on the campus of North Florida.
Gilbert, the senior from Wesley Chapel, Fla., ran 23.71 Friday evening to place 27th of the 48 runners, missing by a slim fraction of making the 24 semifinalists for Saturday. The 24th qualifier ran 23.60, the 23rd ran 23.59 and the 22nd clocked 23.587. With the heats, Gilbert did not actually race against those in 22nd, 23rd, or 24th and that .1 of a second was simply by the timing and not a side-by-side race. Her 23.71 time was her third-fastest time of the season and well off her personal-best time of 23.50.
Also on Friday, discus thrower Alysiah Whittaker was not able to move on in the first of her two events. The junior from St. Louis threw 47.53m (155-11) to place 36th among the elite 48-thrower field. That was Whittaker's fourth-longest throw of the season.
Saturday's final day will see GSU's junior throwers, LaPorscha Wells and Whittaker, compete in the shot put. The top 12 shot putters among the 48 advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. in June. Whitfield enters Saturday with the 12th-longest throw among the 48 competitors, with Wells having the 15th-best seeded distance during the season. So, every inch will matter in these results.
