ATLANTA - The Georgia State men's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory against Oglethorpe in Saturday night's exhibition match. Sophomore Hannes Burmeister scored the game-winner, his fifth career goal.
Georgia State maintained great defensive play throughout the game, holding the Stormy Petrels to just four total shots. The Panthers had 13 shots overall, with six coming in overtime.
Burmeister scored the first goal of the game in the 27th minute, putting the ball in an unattended net after Oglethorpe goalie Robert Goldin left the box. Both teams remained without another goal until the 86th minute when Edan Mendoza scored and put GSU up 2-0.
To get more experience in before the regular season, both teams decided to play a 20 minute overtime. Tristen Trevino scored the lone overtime goal, scoring on an assist from Amiri Abraham.
“We're pleased to get out and play against somebody else,” head coach Brett Surrency said. “As we expected, we did a good job with some things and saw somethings we can get better at. I'm pleased with the level of competition I saw from the guys in preseason heading into the opener at Mercer. We definitely have a lot of candidates for starting positions come next week.”
The Panthers kick-off the regular season at Mercer on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. The team will return to Panthersville for its home opener against Memphis on Aug. 28 at noon.
