ATLANTA- The Georgia State men's soccer team defeated Central Arkansas 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex. Redshirt-freshman Oliver Haines scored his first two career goals, including the game-winner.
The Panthers won for the third-straight time and improved to 3-1 this season, while the Bears fell to 2-1 in their first loss of the season.
GSU came out strong on both sides of the ball, holding UCA to just three shots, while taking six in the first half.
Junior Rashid Alarape scored first for the Panthers in the 22nd minute of play off an assist from junior Nick Hague. The goal was Alarape's first of the season.
Redshirt-freshman Oliver Haines scored next for GSU, the goal that proved to be the game-winner. Haines scored his first career goal off an assist from sophomore Hannes Burmeister in the 36th minute of play. The goal sent Georgia State into the half leading Central Arkansas 2-0.
Haines scored again quickly coming out of halftime, putting him just one goal shy of a hat trick which would have been the third-straight match the Panthers had a player with three goals. Haines scored at the 49th minute mark off an assist from Alarape.
The Bears cut the deficit in the 78th minute after Wes Carson scored off an assist from Muny Chan.
Junior Yannic Horn had an impressive match in the net, recording nine saves total. Horn tied his single-game record for saves set his freshman year at Montevallo.
“We are very pleased with the win, even though we looked a little sloppy,” head coach Brett Surrency said. “We were able to play all of our healthy field players today which gave several guys some good experience in the field.”
The Panthers will return to the pitch next weekend in the Capital City Classic in Rhode Island. GSU will face Brown on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. and Providence College on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at GeorgiaStateSports.com.
