Singles, Doubles Wins Highlight Men's Tennis Tournament

ATHENS, Ga.- The Georgia State men's tennis team competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Championship hosted by Georgia this weekend. The tournament was highlighted by a doubles win from Felipe Jaworski and Jack MacFarlane, as well as a singles win from Andrei Andrukhou.

Senior Zackery Kennedy competed in a play in round to qualify for the Division I Round of 64, where he advanced to the Round of 32. Kennedy was defeated No. 7 Alexandru Ghilea of Oklahoma 6-3, 6-2. No. 104 Jannis Koeke competed in the top flight as well, but was defeated in the Round of 64 by Yancy Dennis of South Carolina 6-0, 6-1.

Jaworski was defeated 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round of the Division II flight by the eventual champion Johannes Ingildsen of Florida. MacFarlane was also knocked out of the bracket with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Niko Moceanu of Texas Tech.

Sebastian Acuna advanced to the Round of 32 in the Division II flight after a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 win over Oriol Puig of Charlotte, but fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Jesse Flores of Miami. Freshman Abhin Sharma made his Panther debut in the Division III flight but was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Arjune Watane of UCF in the Round of 64.

Andrukhou won the Division III flight Sunday afternoon, defeating Sam Slade of cross-town rival Kennesaw State 6-0, 6-2. Valentin Horvat was the final Panther to compete in the Division III flight, falling in the Round of 64 6-2, 6-3 to Niclas Genovese of Miami.

In doubles play, four Georgia State duos competed in two flights. Kennedy and Koeke advanced to the Round of 32 in the Division I flight, but were defeated 7-6 by No. 5 Elliott Orkin and Maxx Lipman of Florida. Andrukhou and Acuna fell in the opening round of the top flight with a 6-3 loss to David Biosca and Miguel Este of ETSU.

Horvat and Sharma fell 6-4 in the play in round for the Division II flight to David Gonzalez and Wenceslao Albin of ETSU. MacFarlane and Jaworski won the Division II flight 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 in the tie-breaker set against Christian Harris and Sam Edwards of Clemson.

GSU will compete in the All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. next weekend.
