PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The Georgia State women's golf team overcame a 90-minute lightning delay and slow start to shoot one of the best rounds of the afternoon and stand fifth at the Jacksonville Classic with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.
The Panthers opened play with a 17-over par 305 in the first round, before rebounding with the third-lowest round of the tournament, a 3-over par 291 to sit at 20-over par and tied for fifth place at Marsh Landing Country Club.
All five Panthers are among the top 30 in the field, led by a trio of golfers tied for 22nd at 5-over par.
Senior Jooeun Bae, coming off a career-best tie for ninth last month at the USA Intercollegiate where she set a personal best three-round score by nine strokes, shot a career-low even par to lead the Panthers in the afternoon.
“We have really been working on the mental part of the game and today it showed,” head coach Cathy Mant said. “The team did not let a little bit of a rough start to the morning ruin their rounds and came out firing in the afternoon. I'm really proud of everyone, especially Jooeun who is really stepping up as a senior and playing the best golf of her career.”
Following an opening round 77, Bae shot 72 in the afternoon to stand tied for 22nd with teammates Jemima Gregson and Solene Le Coz. Gregson shot rounds of 76 and 73, while Le Coz also shot 77 and 72 as the trio sits at 5-over par.
Freshman Harmanprit Kaur added a pair of 75s to stand tied for 28th at 6-over par, while redshirt-sophomore Emily Royer added a 77 and 74 on day one of play and is 7-over.
