ATLANTA -- More than 20 Major League Baseball scouts were on hand for Georgia State's annual Pro Scout Day, held Thursday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
"We had a really great turnout from the scouts and a lot of great baseball played today," 11th-year head coach Greg Frady said. "It did feel like game day, and I thought that really elevated our play.
"All in all, I thought we pitched pretty today, but we also hit, and that was led by Cam Sperry," Frady continued. "And that was great to see because Cam is coming off an injury and he has put in a lot of hard work.
Sperry, a redshirt senior outfielder and left-handed hitter, missed the entire 2016 season with a knee injury, but he was 5-for-5 today with three runs batted in.
Senior catcher-first baseman Zach Wingate, junior first baseman Jack Thompson and sophomore outfielder Luke Leonard hit home runs.
Eight different pitchers took the mound in the seven-inning game, including senior right-hander Bryce Conley, who struck out three in two innings. Sophomore righty Liam Henry struck out the side in the final inning.
The Panthers turned three double plays.
"We also played some good defense, and that's something we've spent a lot of time on this fall," Frady said.
As always, the support of the #PantherFamily is vital.
"Thanks to our Georgia State Baseball parents, who came out early and cooked for our players and the scouts," Frady said. "It was a great Georgia State family day. This marks the midway point of our fall practice, and we're excited to continue our preparations for the 2017 season."
