Wells Breaks School Record in Indoor Season Opener

ATLANTA - Georgia State placed first in the team standings at the season opening BSC Icebreaker Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Friday in Birmingham, Ala. The Panthers finished ahead of a handful of schools including Georgia Tech, UAB and Tulane.

LaPorscha Wells won both the Shot Put and the Weight Throw on Friday. In the Weight Throw, Wells threw a personal best of 20.65 meters (67' 9”) which also set a new meet record and bettered her own school record by two feet. Behind Wells, Tracy Dorcemont, Rashell Reid, Alysiah Whittaker and Lysah Russell secured spots two through five, respectively, for GSU in the Weight Throw.

Freshman Alexus Shaw shine din her indoor debut, placing first in the Triple Jump with a leap of 12.15 meters (39' 10.5”) to become No. 3 on the GSU all-time indoor performance list. Nylah Chavis placed third in the High Jump, clearing a height of 1.65 meters (5' 5”).

GSU's 4x400m relay team narrowly missed first place by .02 of a second, taking home second place.

Georgia State has a few weeks before the grind of the indoor season kicks into full gear. The Panthers will compete next on Jan. 7 at the Clemson Orange and Purple Invitational.
