GSU Goes 2-0, Will Play FSU In Championship Match

TALLAHASSEE - The Georgia State men's tennis team defeated Florida A&M and Troy in its spring opening matches at the Florida State Invite Saturday afternoon. The Panthers will play host No. 27 Florida State in the championship match Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

In the opener against Florida A&M, freshman Quentin Coulaud and Felipe Jaworski were the first doubles pair to finish for the Panthers, defeating Jalen Evans and Karlyn Small 6-0. Jannis Koeke and Zackery Kennedy clinched the doubles point at the No. 1 match with a 6-3 victory over Carlos Waitman and Espinoza Walner. Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Andrukhou's match went unfinished.

In singles play, Jack MacFarlane defeated Hema Hasona 6-1, 6-0 to put GSU up 2-0. In the No. 1 match, Kennedy won 6-1, 6-4 over Courage Okungbowa to widen the score to 3-0. Jaworski clinched the match in a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Illya Skoromnyy in the No. 5 match.

Acuna earned the final point for the Panthers with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Waitman. Coulaud and Andrukhou's matches went unfinished.

With the win over the Rattlers, the Panthers advanced in the bracket to face Sun Belt opponent Troy. GSU defeated the Trojans 4-0 in straight sets, with Koeke earning the match-clinching point.

“I'm really happy with how the team performed today with great energy and focus all around,” head coach Brett Ross said. “We really took care of business and were efficient which will hopefully translate into fresh legs for a big match tomorrow against Florida State.”

The Panthers look to remain undefeated Sunday against Florida State in the championship match.
