Freshmen Lewis, Soles Share Student-Athlete of the Week honors

ATLANTA -- A pair of freshmen share honors as the Georgia State Student-Athletes of the Week, powered by the U.S. Marines, in softball pitcher Emily Soles and women's basketball guard Jada Lewis.

Lewis, from Powder Springs, Ga., and McEachern High School, led GSU the women's basketball team to a pair of victories last week, averaging 15.5 points in the Sun Belt Conference wins road wins at Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State.

Against the Chanticleers, Lewis scored a season-high 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field and also contributed two assists and a steal in the 69-48 victory. She followed with 11 points, two assists and a blocked shot against the Mountaineers. Perhaps most importantly, she was a perfect 9-for-9

For the season she is the Panthers' leading scorer at 11.1 points per game while shooting better than 40 percent from 3-point range.

Winners of five of their last six games, the Panthers host Texas State Thursday at 7 p.m. at the GSU Sports Arena.

Soles, the right-handed hurler from Bishop, Ga., and Prince Avenue Christian School, made her Georgia State debut over the weekend and picked up two victories to help the Panthers win Mississippi State's Bulldog Kickoff Classic in dramatic fashion.

In her first college game in the circle, she tossed five innings and allowed just one run on three hits as the Panthers' dominated Western Kentucky 13-1 in Friday's season opener. On Saturday, she came on in relief against the Hilltoppers with two scoreless innings to earn another win in Georgia State's 2-1, 8-inning victory.

Soles was even more impressive Sunday as she pitched 10 innings against Mississippi State, allowing just one run on five hits. She did not figure in the decision, but the Panthers went on to win the game 2-1 in 12 innings.

For the weekend, Soles was 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA. She allowed just eight hits--only one for extra bases--in 17 innings.

Georgia State hosts Georgia Tech Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.
