JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia State improved to 6-2 on the season with wins over South Carolina State and Kansas on Friday. It's the third time in the last four years GSU has started a season 6-2.
Game 1: Georgia State 8, South Carolina State 0 (5 innings)
The Panthers started off the day with a four-run first inning to go on top versus SCSU and never look back. The Panthers added two more runs in the third off a Megan Litumbe two-run homer. It was Litumbe's first home run since Feb. 12, 2016 after the redshirt junior suffered a season-ending injury on Feb. 14 last year.
Cassidy Faulk ended the contest with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth that brought the run rule into effect.
Freshman Peyton Worsham made her collegiate debut, getting the start against South Carolina State. Worsham recorded the complete-game shutout and tallied five strikeouts en route to her first career win.
Game 2: Georgia State 5, Kansas 4
The second feature on Friday was a much closer battle. The Jayhawks jumped on top 1-0 in the bottom of the third and the Panthers were kept off the board until the fifth inning. Georgia State started off the fifth with back-to-back doubles. Reagan Morgan got it going and Kristin Hawkins scored Morgan to tie the ballgame at 1-1. The Panthers weren't done, however. Ivie Drake drew a walk to load the bases with one out and head coach Roger Kincaid called freshman Kylee Love's name to pinch hit. Love's first career hit was a memorable one as she blasted a grand slam to left field to give the Panthers a 5-1 lead. It's the second season in a row that a Panther freshman has hit a grand slam. In 2016, Arden Jobe's first career homer came with the bags full.
Georgia State would need all four runs as the Jayhawks mounted a vicious comeback in the final frame. Kansas led off the inning with a solo home run and added two more before Georgia State shut the door to earn the 5-4 victory.
Mandy Chance recorded the win while Kinsley Jennings was credited for the save.
Georgia State will face South Dakota State and North Florida Saturday to wrap up the Osprey Invite.
