Wells and Whittaker Named GSU Student-Athletes of the Week

ATLANTA - LaPorscha Wells and Alysiah Whittaker are this week's Georgia State Student-Athletes of the Week, powered by the U.S. Marines.

Wells became the first thrower in Georgia State history to qualify for the NCAA Track and Field Championships last Thursday with a third-place finish in the hammer throw at the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington, Ky. Wells placed third in the hammer with a throw of 63.98m.

In the shot put on Saturday, Whittaker finished sixth with a throw of 16.74m. With the top-12 competitors advancing to Eugene, Whittaker became just the second thrower in GSU history to make it to the NCAA Finals, joining Wells. Whittaker holds the GSU school record in shot put with a distance of 16.83m.

The duo next will travel to Eugene, Ore. to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 7-10 on ESPN.
