Preseason Practice Update

ATLANTA -- "We have a group of young men who like to work," Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliott said on Day 2 of preseason practice for the Panthers.

"They have the hunger, they want to be successful, and they are doing the things we are asking of them to be successful," Elliott, the Panthers' first-year head coach, said Wednesday morning at the GSU Practice Complex.

Georgia State opens the season on Thursday, Aug. 31 by hosting Tennessee State in the inaugural game at Georgia State Stadium.

Even though preseason practice began this week, the team put in plenty of hard work over the summer in the weight room and conditioning drills.

Defensive coordinator Nate Fuqua said, "We're going to lean a lot on 15 practices that we had in the spring and all the hard work these guys put in over the summer."

Inside linebackers coach Rusty Wright agreed.

"Retention from the spring has been good," said Wright, who also serves as the special teams coordinator. "Those guys are understanding how we are trying to practice and compete everyday. We've thrown a lot at them the first two days, faster than we did in the spring. They've retained it, and the missed assignments have been minimal.
"They've got to keep working to push through some things, but the tempo has been good and they're playing hard."

Preseason drills continue Thursday, and on Day 3, the Panthers will work in shorts and shoulder pads.
