ATLANTA – As construction of Georgia State Stadium has nearly wrapped up, many pieces of the project have already come online, including the 5,600 square-foot video board which will be the biggest in the Group of 5 and the eighth-largest in college football.
The Mitsubishi Electric-made screen is 71 feet tall and 79 feet wide, weighs 50 tons and has more than five million LED lights. The board will also be the third-tallest in the NCAA, only behind Connecticut and Vanderbilt.
The display consists of 266 panels that each contains 20 lighting units, resulting in a screen with nearly 5,200,000 LED (light emitting diode) modules that can reproduce one billion colors, and be clearly seen from almost any viewing angle. The 400,000 watt screen, which is cooled by 10 fans that move 60,000 cubic feet of air per minute, can be accessed for service via a nine-tiered catwalk behind the display.
When the 2017 season gets underway, the only schools in the country that will have bigger scoreboards than Georgia State will be Auburn, Texas A&M, Texas, Miami (Fla.), Arkansas, Southern Cal and Penn State. Ironically, the Panthers face the Nittany Lions in week three of the season in State College, Penn.
The Atlanta Braves originally installed the board in 2005, which at the time was the world’s largest outdoor high-definition display.
“Everything is coming along great as we get ready for opening night on Aug. 31,” Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb said. “Although we believe that there will not be a bad seat in the house, we also love the fact that we will have one of biggest video boards in the country that can be utilized for so many things.”
Opening night of the 2017 season comes on Thursday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m., as the Panthers host Tennessee State. Georgia State will also face Memphis for Family Weekend on Sept. 30, followed by Homecoming against Troy on Oct. 21.
The Panthers will face South Alabama on Thursday night, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m., live on ESPNU, followed by Heroes Day on Nov. 25 against Appalachian State. Georgia State will close out the regular season hosting Idaho for Senior Day on Dec. 2.
