ATLANTA – Hannes Burmeister, Kyle Clinton and Max Hemmings of Georgia State men's soccer all picked up 2018 Preseason All-Sun Belt honors, with Burmeister tabbed as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The Panthers also were selected to finish the regular season in second place, the league announced on Tuesday.
Burmeister, a senior from Bentwisch, Germany, earned All-Sun Belt First Team and All-Sun Belt Tournament Team honors in 2017. He ranked second in the conference in game-winning goals with four, and fourth in both total goals with eight and total points with 18.
Clinton helped lead the Panthers' back line to seven shutouts and concede only 21 goals – both ranking atop the conference last year. He finished the season with three goals and picked up 2017 NSCAA All-Southeast Region First Team honors as well as 2017 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year.
Hemmings ranked second on the team in game-winning goals with three and third in total goals with five in 2017. His 29 shots tied for the second most on the team, 10 of which were on target. Hemmings also earned All-Sun Belt Second Team honors last year.
GSU received 18 points in the Preseason Coaches' Poll, six points behind first-place and defending conference champion Coastal Carolina. Georgia Southern was picked to finish third with 17 points, while Appalachian State and Howard round out the poll in fourth and fifth.
Georgia State returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday for its second exhibition vs. North Florida at the GSU Soccer Complex. The Panthers then travel to Jekyll Island, Ga. for three days of training and their final exhibition against Jacksonville on Aug. 18.
