ATLANTA- The Panthers are back on the road this weekend as Georgia State women's tennis heads to Orlando for a pair of late week matches. GSU will face No. 21 UCF on Thursday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. and battle Denver at noon on Friday.
Georgia State (2-5) will look to keep momentum from a 4-0 sweep of Samford last time out. GSU will face a nationally ranked 6-2 UCF squad and a 7-1 Denver team that has won six straight matches. Like the Panthers, Denver was ousted in the first round of last season's NCAA Tournament, while UCF advanced to the round of 32.
Coach Alex Leatu hopes that a difficult schedule to begin the season has prepared the Panthers for this weekend's task. “This group has definitely had some growing pains but our leadership is improving and the culture is becoming the number one priority for every single player. They take pride in that.”
Leatu went on to stress that GSU will continue to work on the little things, including bringing an intensity to every point “It's just a matter of consistency, and an acute focus on being a better team than yesterday. This weekend, we hope to see unbridled energy and fast starts.”
Georgia State has received fast starts from the doubles pair of Eva Chivu and Damira Muminović who are 4-3 early in the season. With a 5-2 record, junior Daniela Ramirez has recorded the second most wins of all Sun Belt players in the number three singles slot.
The two weekend tilts mark the last non-conference road matches for the Panthers until an April 6 meet up with Winthrop. GSU opens the home portion of the season on March 3 with matches against Georgia Southern and UT Martin.
