ATLANTA -- The inaugural football season at Georgia State Stadium will kick off on Thursday, Aug. 31 vs. Tennessee State, one of two Thursday night contests the Panthers will host as part of their 2017 schedule announced Wednesday by the Sun Belt Conference.
Georgia State’s first season under new head coach Shawn Elliott will also feature a new home as the Panthers move into Georgia State Stadium--formerly Turner Field and the home of the Atlanta Braves.
The Panthers will host six home games, two of them on Thursday nights with the Aug. 31 opener as well as a Sun Belt matchup with South Alabama on Thursday, Oct. 26 that will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
Non-conference foe Memphis (Sept. 30) and Sun Belt opponents Troy (Oct. 21), Appalachian State (Nov. 25) and Idaho (Dec. 2) will also visit Georgia State Stadium.
The road slate features a trip to Penn State on Sept. 16 and the annual showdown with in-state rival Georgia Southern on Nov. 4 in Statesboro.
The Panthers open conference play with back-to-back road games at Sun Belt newcomer Coastal Carolina (Oct. 7) and UL Monroe (Oct. 14) and also travel to Texas State (Nov. 11) in conference and Charlotte (Sept. 23) out of conference.
Georgia State returns 17 starters, led by a pair of All-Sun Belt returnees in receiver Penny Hart and cornerback Chandon Sullivan.
