Happy Holidays to the Georgia State Family,
WE NEED PANTHERS IN ORLANDO!
Sunday was a very exciting day in the growth of the GSU Football Program with our selection to the AutoNation Cure Bowl in Orlando on Saturday, December 16, at 2:30 pm. It also sets a challenge for us. Quite candidly, I was anxious Saturday night because it was a real possibility that if six Sun Belt Conference teams qualified for bowl games, we would be in a fight to secure one of those bids. This was not because our team was undeserving, but because we do not travel like others… YET! Under current conference agreements, teams are picked by the bowl game organizers rather than placed based on competitive standings. All bowl games depend on ticket sales for their economic survival, so these are simple business decisions by them. Whether this year or any future year, being left out of bowl game would be a negative that rival schools would use against us in recruiting. I promise you that.
So, this is the huge favor and challenge. We had an unbelievable crowd in Jacksonville for the NCAA Basketball games two years ago. We need this same turnout in Orlando. We need each of you to be in Orlando for the game. We need each of you to bring family and friends to the game. If you know people in Florida, get them to join us. We are offering bus rides for all GSU students and free tickets to the GSU students who attended the Idaho game on Dec. 2. We are going to reach out to youth groups in the Orlando area too. So, if you want to buy tickets for GSU students or Orlando-area kids, please contact the ticket office ASAP.
It’s a little over a 6-hour drive to Orlando. Right now, flights are in the $200-400 range. We’re also going to sponsor buses for those who want to go that route. We will add as many buses as necessary. We have information on the team hotel as well as other accommodations in the area. We will be pushing all of this information out in the coming days.
Our hope is that the game being on Saturday afternoon allows for convenient travel at minimized costs. With the quick turnaround, we want to make travel as simple as possible because we know asking for your time, support, and money are big asks, but if this program is going to reach where we all want it to be, then consistent bowl game attendance is crucial.
