Today’s sand session interview is with Georgia Johnson, a freshman from Brisbane, Queensland.

* Check back in every Tuesday and Thursday for Sand Sessions as the team prepares for the 2017 season.

* Head coach Beth Van Fleet and the Panthers travel to St. Augustine, Fla. to take on UNCW in the season opener on March 4th. First serve is set for 10:30 a.m.

What is your favorite and/or least favorite part about playing beach volleyball?

Johnson: The atmosphere of the sport is unlike any other sport I’ve played – it is the perfect mixture of chill vibes and crazy digs.

Name one person that’s made a big impact on your life and briefly describe.

GJ: My parents have sacrificed a lot for me to be where I am today, and I am eternally grateful. They have never stopped supporting me and encouraging me – I owe them!

What is your spirit animal?

GJ: Meerkat!!!! When they can’t stay awake and just fall over…

Favorite athlete and why?

GJ: Mariafe Artacho del Solar – Australian Beach Volleyballer. She earned a gold medal at the U23 World Championships and went to the Rio Olympics. She’s only 5’8” – the hard work, grit and determination she shows when playing and training is a true inspiration.

Describe your role for the team off the court if you have one. (Team mom, the fun one, etc.)

GJ: The international one.

What song best serves as a soundtrack to your life and why?

GJ: Land Down Under – Men at work because I come from a land down under.
