ATLANTA - College Colors Weekend and a home opener make Saturday night special for men's soccer. As part of college colors weekend, fans will receive a special GSU blue rally towel to help cheer on the Panthers against USC Upstate.
The Panthers lead the all-time series between the two teams, holding a 4-3 advantage including a 2-1 victory in Spartanburg, S.C. last season. GSU has won the last three meetings between the teams.
"The boys are really excited about the home opener," said head coach Brett Surrency. "One of the things we are trying to establish is home supremacy at Panthersville and hopefully this will be the start to that."
Georgia State won its regular season opener for the second straight season after defeating Gardner-Webb, 2-1, in overtime in Boiling Springs, N.C. on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers received an early goal from sophomore Gimel Gordon, and then sophomore Alejandro Reyes found the back of the net in overtime for his first game-winning goal of his career. Reyes finished the match with one goal and one assist.
Upstate played its regular season opener on the road against Georgia Southern, losing 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans received goals from John Kadane, Hakeem King, and John Collins. Starting goalkeeper Jason McCabe allowed four goals in 15 shots in the contest.
