OXFORD, Ala. -- Georgia State sophomore Katharine Showalter won the women's 4K race, while junior Chris Harper won the men's 5K race as the Panther cross country squads swept the Struts JSU Opener on Saturday in Oxford, Ala.

"Winning both races was a great way to get the season started," said head coach Chris England. "On both sides we had a lot of runners in the top 10. Now we must turn our attention to next week's home meet.

On the women's side, the Panthers claimed the three of the top four spots out of 53 runners. Following Showalter (14:01) were freshman Anna Sinclair (14:04) and senior Caitlin Price (14:25).

The Panthers also claimed spots seven through 14, with Alison Bishop (14:33), Kacee Houle (14:43), Kelsey Spinks (14:48) and Jasmine Love (14:50) rounding out the top 10.

The women's team won with a score of 22, 30 points lower than the next closest team.

The men were paced by Harper (15:19), while freshmen Tyler Tomy (15:22) and Carlos Galindo (15:23) finished second and third, respectively, out of 36 runners. The five unattached runners in the race do not count in the overall meet results.

Freshman Warren Enriquez placed sixth with a time of 15:38, while Shyam Kapadia finished eighth in a time of 15:50 and Julian Black (16:01) finished 10th to close out the top 10 finishers for the Panthers.

The men's team claimed the title with only 17 points, 24 points better than its closest competitor.

The Panthers return to action next Friday as they host the Georgia State Invitational. The women's 5K race begins at 3 p.m., while the men's 8K race is slated for 3:30 p.m. The meet will take place at the Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga.
