Panthers Host Georgia State Invitational on Friday

General Information

ATLANTA -- The Georgia State cross country teams will host the Georgia State Invitational Friday afternoon at the Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga.

The women's 5K race is set to begin at 3 p.m., while the men's 8K race is slated for 3:40 p.m.

The GSU Invitational, which returns following a two-year break, was a school tradition from 1973-2007. The Nash Farm Battlefield course will also be home to the 2011 CAA Championships as Georgia State will host a cross country championship meet for the first time as a member of the CAA.

"We were eager to bring a home meet back to GSU this year," said head coach Chris England. "It will be a good opportunity for our runners to be very familiar with a course before competing on race day. It will also give us a chance to handle a home meet before hosting conference in a year. We are very excited about the opportunity to host the CAA Championships in 2011."

The Panthers are coming off a strong opening weekend as both teams won the Struts JSU Opener. The men's team were led by five runners in the top 10, including junior Chris Harper and freshmen Tyler Tomy and Carlos Galindo finishing in the two through four spots. The women had seven runners in the top 10 led by sophomore Katharine Showalter, who won the meet, and freshman Anna Sinclair and redshirt senior Caitlin Price, who finished second and fourth, respectively.

The team's expected to compete in both races are Jacksonville State, Troy, Clayton State, Reinhardt, Warren Wilson, Morehouse, Oglethorpe and Mercer, while Spelman will bring their women's team.

The Nash Farm Battlefield saw at least four exchanges between parts of the Union and Confederate Armies during the Civil War, with all coming in 1864.

The course is a two-kilometer loop that is mostly grass with rolling hills and is very spectator friendly.

Admission and parking for the meet are free, and parking will be available at the battlefield. For directions, click here.
