ATLANTA-Georgia State's first week of spring football practice concluded with a guest appearance by new men's basketball coach Ron Hunter, who stopped by to watch the Panthers' workout Thursday morning at the GSU Practice Complex.

Hunter was welcomed by head football coach Bill Curry, who invited the newest member of the GSU family to address the football team.

Sophomore quarterback Kelton Hill takes on a more prominent role this spring, sharing the quarterback duties with fellow sophomore Bo Schlechter. As a backup last fall, Hill played in every game and was the Panthers' leading rusher with 416 yards, an average of 6.9 yards per carry and three touchdowns, but he threw just 15 passes.

"I'm trying to be more of a leader," Hill said after practice. "I wasn't a leader last season, so that's something I'm working on.

"Coach Curry expects a lot out of us, and we're trying to give it to him," Hill added.

On the defensive side, outside linebacker Mark Hogan is excited about the faster pace of practices this spring. With the offense moving from play to play much more quickly, the defense must do the same.

"We're definitely going up-tempo," said the sophomore from Matthews, N.C. "It's fun. The faster pace of practice is really going to help us next fall because some of the teams we play do that."

Hogan, who was fifth on the team with 54 tackles last season, added, "There's a lot of carryover from the fall, but there are also some things we have to relearn and some new things we're doing for the first time. Our whole emphasis this spring is getting better against the run."
