Birmingham, Ala. - Georgia State rising sophomore Grant Cagle finished second on Sunday at the Greystone Invitational, leading a group of four Panthers who made the cut in Birmingham. Cagle shot back-to-back rounds of 69 on the weekend to finish the tournament at 5-under par, just one stroke off the lead.
Cagle, who recently finished his freshman season, opened the event with rounds of 70 and 75 on the Founders Course at Greystone Golf and Country Club. He tied with Clemson rising junior McCuen Elmore and just one stroke back of Georgia Tech rising junior Bo Andrews, who finished at 6-under.
Davin White, who signed with the Panthers during the spring and will begin his collegiate career this fall at State, finished tied for 14th. White shot rounds of 75 and 73 on Thursday and Friday, before finishing carding rounds of 74 and 71 on the weekend.
White, an all-state golfer from Spalding High School, was a two-time winner of the North Georgia Classic hosted by Roswell HS.
Panther teammates Jared Cagle and Tyler Gruca finished in a tie for 45th. Both played solid golf the first three days, before conditions got tougher in Sunday's final round and the averaged scored increased significantly.
Cagle, who will be the lone senior for the Panthers this fall, shot 73, 74, 75 and 81 to finish at 15-over. Gruca opened with rounds of 75, 70 and 76, before shooting a final round 82.
The 72-hole stroke play event features some of the top collegiate golfers in the country. Like a PGA Tour event, the Greystone features a 36-hole cut of the low 60 and ties. It is now in its 11th year and has an impressive list of winners. Included on that list of victors is now PGA Tour star Michael Thompson, who finished fourth this past weekend at the Travelers Championship, shooting a final round 62.
Recent graduate Alan Fowler will represent the Panthers this week at the Dogwood Invitational, played a Druid Hills Golf Club. Several Panthers will also be competing in the Georgia State Amateur Championship early next month at Cherokee Town & Country Club, July 7-10.
