Miranda Smith was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for games the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 5. Her recognition was announced along with CAA co-Players of the Week junior Elena Delle Donne of Delaware and senior Tia Lewis of Old Dominion.
Smith, a 5-foot-9 guard from Roanoke, Va. (Patrick Henry High School), scored 23 points in the two games last week for GSU. She played a key role with 15 points in the Panthers 81-74 win over Northeastern University.
For the week, Smith hit 9-of-19 field goals (47.4%) to average 11.5 points per game. She added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The 15-point game for Smith topped her earlier 12-point game on Jan. 29 at VCU in Richmond and her 11-point night vs. James Madison.
The freshman had scored 1,169 points during her four-year prep career in Virginia at Patrick Henry High School and Franklin County High School.
Smith becomes the second GSU freshman to get the CAA nod this season, following 6-foot-3 center Alana Beroth in late December.
