Men's Soccer Posts Another Strong Semester

ATLANTA--The Georgia State men's soccer team posted yet another strong effort in the classroom last semester to earn the highest grade point average of all the GSU men's athletic teams during the spring semester.

The men's soccer team earned a combined GPA of 3.27 in the spring semester. It is the latest in a string of academic honors for the men's soccer program under the direction of third-year head coach Brett Surrency. Leading the effort were sophomore Chris Locandro and freshman Ali Elkhalil who earned President's List honors in the spring signifying a semester GPA of 4.0 or higher.

Six GSU men's soccer student-athletes earned Dean's List honors as students earning a 3.5 semester GPA or higher. Those six were juniors Vincent Foermer and Eric Lawrence, and freshmen Dylan Crocker, Auddie Hynd, Bo Stroup and Jordan Weise.

Another six Panthers were listed on the Athletic Director Honor Roll that recognized the student-athletes for achieving a 3.2 or higher semester GPA. Those six were juniors Victor Nkhoma and Peter Vania, redshirt sophomore Caleb Kernan, sophomores Peter Kurowski and Stephen McGill and freshman Caolan O'Gorman.

The Georgia State men's soccer team has earned a variety of academic honors following one of the best seasons in school history. Last year the Panthers went 13-8-1, achieved the team's highest RPI ranking in school history of No. 26 on Oct. 25 and earned the school's first at-large berth in the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. Following the season, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America honored GSU after the men's soccer team posted above a 3.0 GPA in the fall semester.

Foermer and junior Gimel Gordon also earned individual academic accolades this offseason. The Colonial Athletic Association honored Foermer as the CAA Scholar-Athlete in men's soccer and the Seevetal, Germany, native was also named to the 2012 University Division Men Scholar All-South Region Team by the NSCAA. Gordon earned a First Team Academic Momentum Award from the Scholar Baller program in conjunction with the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) last December.

The Georgia State men's soccer team returns to the field in August after posting solid results this spring. Visit the men's soccer home page on www.GeorgiaStateSports.com for the announcement of the team's fall schedule and all the latest news as the team prepares for the 2012 campaign.
