ATLANTA-Georgia State
freshman guard R.J. Hunter averaged 15.3 points and 4.7 rebounds, helping the
Panthers to three-straight wins last week to earn his second CAA Rookie of the
Week honor as announced by the conference earlier Monday.
The freshman averaged 31.7 minutes per game, shooting
14-of-37 from the floor and 7-of-20 from three-point range. He added seven
assists, four blocks and eight steals, helping Georgia State earn wins against
Monmouth, Tennessee State and a South Alabama squad receiving votes in the ESPN
Coaches Poll.
Hunter also earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors following
his 14-point, 10-rebound double-double against No. 8 Duke.
“As a dad and a coach, I am extremely proud of R.J.,”
commented head coach Ron Hunter. “It has been great to coach him and watch him
so far this season and every day I feel blessed that he decided to play here.”
R.J. opened the week with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting and a
pair of three-pointers against Monmouth. He added five rebounds, three assists,
two blocks and two steals in 34 minutes.
He finished the week with 25 points, including three
three-pointers and hitting 6-of-7 from the line against South Alabama. He added
six rebounds and four steals against the Jaguars who were receiving votes after
knocking off No. 25 Florida State to open the season.
Hunter is averaging 14.4 points, 6.2 rebounds in 32.8
minutes per game this season, shooting 79.3 percent from the free throw line.
Hunter was also named the College Sports Madness CAA Player
of the Week on Monday for his efforts last week.
Georgia State (3-2) will host East Carolina (4-0) on Monday
night in the GSU Sports Arena at 7 p.m.
