ATLANTA— Georgia State freshman guard R.J. Hunter averaged 21.0
points and 6.5 rebounds in his first CAA games last week to earn his fourth CAA
Rookie of the Week honor as announced by the conference earlier Monday.
Hunter shot 55.2 percent from the floor, including 6-of-12 from
three-point range as the Panthers split a pair of conference games.
Hunter
is one of just five freshmen in the country averaging at least 16.0 points and
5.0 rebounds per game this season. He is among the favorites for CAA Rookie of
the Year honors.
He opened the week with his sixth 20-plus point performance of the
season, scoring 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting against Drexel. He knocked down a
pair of three-pointers and went 3-of-4 from the free throw line, while pulling
down six rebounds in 33 minutes.
On Saturday, he led Georgia State to a 16-point victory over James
Madison, scoring 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-7 from
three-point range. He pulled down seven rebounds, dished out one assist and
grabbed one steal in 37 minutes.
“As I have said before, it has been a lot of fun coaching R.J.
this season,” commented his dad and men's basketball coach Ron Hunter. “After
missing a lot of his senior season last year, it has been great to be with him
so much this year.
“R.J. is developing into a fine basketball player. He is growing a
lot and really working to be as good a basketball player as he can be.”
For the season, Hunter is averaging a team-high 16.2 points per
game, grabbing 5.9 rebounds per contest. He is shooting 44.4 percent from the
floor, 37.1 percent from three-point range and 80.7 percent from the free throw
line.
Georgia State (6-9, 1-1 CAA) will face Hofstra on Monday night in
New York at 7 p.m.
