Five Days To Season Opener

The Georgia State softball team enters the 2013 season with five seniors on the roster. With the start of the season less than a week away, we'll count down to the season opener with an in-depth look at these five Panther seniors each day. Today's subject is outfielder Carrie Williams.

Q:  How long have you played softball and how did you get started?

A: I started playing on my first softball team at age 5. Growing up my parents knew the importance of being active and both were in love with sports. At a very young age, they let me dabble in all different sports, after I got a taste for the sports I like I was able to narrow it down and focus on the ones that made me the happiest.

Q: What do you enjoy about playing your position? If you could play another position, what would you choose?
A: I love playing the outfield because you have so much room to run around and it gives you time to pick up speed and make dramatic catches or throwing out a runner at home. If I could play another position, it would probably be catching, because you and the pitcher can control the game. As a catcher, you need to be a leader and you have the best view of the field to make decisions.

Q: Why did you pick your jersey number?
A: Picking my number is actually a funny story. When I came in my freshmen year there were only two numbers left, 22 and 30, because at the time there was a rule that we could not pick a number from 1-9. Both Audrey [Mason] and I didn't want the number 30, so being the mature freshmen we were, we decided to play Rock-Paper-Scissors to see who go to pick the number they wanted.

Q: Do you have any personal or team goals for this season?
A: My personal goals for this year is to leave it all out on the field, to give it all that I got and leave with no regrets.

Q: Do you have a nickname and where did it come from?
A: I have had quite a few nicknames over the years. There has been “carebear,” “dub”- I assume that nickname got started from the W in my last name. I got one freshmen year that thank goodness faded away and that was “starfish” for a little prank I pulled on Roger in the airport.

Q: What is something your teammates probably don't know about you?
A: That's hard to say, being with these girls seven days a week for multiple hours a day. We have become a family, so its pretty hard to keep anything about us a secret.

Q: Who is your favorite sports team?
A: The Atlanta Braves are by far my favorite team!

Q: What has been your favorite memory about Georgia State?
A: My favorite memory about Georgia State was in 2011 when we won the CAA conference championship in Hempstead, NY.

Q: What things will you miss about GSU?
A: I think the biggest thing I will miss at GSU is my team and the camaraderie that comes with it. The Georgia State softball program has been such a big part of my life and has helped shape me into the person I am today. I am so thankful for such an amazing opportunity and blessed with all the wonderful friends I have made throughout the years.

Q: Why did you select your major?
A: I knew growing up that I wanted to have a job where I would be involved in helping others and after some research becoming a social worker would help me achieve that goal.

Q: What has been your favorite professor or class at Georgia State?
A: My favorite class at Georgia State was Abnormal Psychology, the class was so intriguing and was so interesting learning about the brain and all the aspect of how certain illness develop and their treatments.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: After graduation I plan on attending grad school and get my Master's in social work. After I graduate from grad school I plan on trying to get a job being a counselor in either middle school or high school.
