ATLANTA-The Georgia State men's
tennis team travels to Birmingham, Ala., for a mid-week matchup against the UAB
Blazers on Wednesday.
The
Panthers (8-6) and Blazers (10-7) will meet for the ninth time in series
history on Wednesday at 3 p.m. local time (4 p.m. E.T.). Georgia State is
looking to build momentum off its first Sun Belt Conference victory since it joined
the conference prior to the season. GSU rallied to win a 4-3 match against
Louisiana Lafayette on Saturday thanks to singles victories from senior Lucas
Santa Ana and junior Robert Schulze.
GSU
is looking to jump back into the ITA National Team rankings with an important win
vs. UAB. The Blazers entered the year ranked inside the Top 75 and have won
eight of their last nine matches.
"UAB
is a good team that is having a very good season," first-year head coach Joerg
Barthel, "I expect this match be close and the team that is better prepared, tougher
mentally and more disciplined will come out on top."
Senior
Victor Valente, the No. 81-ranked player in the ITA National Singles rankings,
puts his six-match winning streak in singles play on the line on Wednesday. He
owns an 11-2 record in singles on the year and is a perfect 12-0 with senior
Lucas Santa Ana in doubles play. Also on a hot streak is Schulze with a
four-match streak in singles play on the line. His most recent singles victory
improved him to 10-2 on the season.
UAB
senior David Zimmermann rides a nine-match winning streak in singles play into
Wednesday's match. He is 12-5 on the season playing all of his matches at the
No. 1 position. The Blazers, like the Panthers, excel in doubles play with to
10-win doubles pairings at the No. 2 and 3 positions.
"We
are in a difficult part of our schedule and are coming off of a great win over a
Sun Belt rival," Barthel said, "As team we are learning to deal with adversity
a little better and it has helped us through some tough matches."
