Sun Belt Championship Dates, Sites and Venues

NEW ORLEANS - The Sun Belt Conference has released postseason dates and sites for the 2013-14 academic year. Sun Belt postseason championships will be held in eight different cities across four states.  Last year, Georgia State's individual sports (cross country, golf, tennis, track & field) were able to compete in Sun Belt championships, with women's cross country and men's tennis earning titles. This year, GSU's teams for basketball, baseball, softball, women's soccer, volleyball and football will begin Sun Belt competition and tournaments.

The first Sun Belt championship is Nov. 2 for cross country with the last championship being the baseball tournament that starts on May 20. Georgia State won its first Sun Belt title in women's cross country last fall.

Troy University, located just three hours from Atlanta, will be the year's first host with the men's and women's cross country championship, and then will play host to the Sun Belt Volleyball Championship from Nov. 21-23 at the Trojan Arena.

The Sun Belt basketball tournament will move to New Orleans in mid-March, tentatively March 12-15. Both men's and women's basketball will compete in the same city in the same week. The start day may move one day, pending the television schedule for the championship game.

In football, the Sun Belt also offers two bowl games with Sun Belt tie-ins. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, and the GoDaddy.com Bowl, held at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala., will both feature Sun Belt teams. The league is working to lock up a third automatic bowl bid as well. Last year, four Sun Belt teams played in postseason bowl games.

Newcomer Texas State will host women's soccer in November and then outdoor track and field in May at its complex in San Marcos, midway between San Antonio and Austin. The indoor track and field teams will compete in February in Birmingham, Ala.

Louisiana-Lafayette will host the Sun Belt softball championship at Lamson Field on its campus. South Alabama will host the baseball tournament in Mobile, Ala., at Eddie Stanky Field.

The GSU men's tennis team will have the chance to defend the 2013 Sun Belt championship at the City Park Tennis Center, which originally opened in New Orleans in 1901. The women's tennis teams will compete at the same site the same week.

Sun Belt golf teams will compete in tournaments at separate locations. The women will compete April 13-16 in Loxely, Ala., midway between Mobile, Ala. and Pensacola, Fla.   The men's teams will battle April 20-23 in Saucier, Miss., north of Gulfport.
